Latino(a) and Middle-Eastern Studies Courses Now Part of City Colleges of Chicago Curriculum
African-American Studies expanding; new courses focus on globalization
Chicago, IL (March 26, 2009) – The City College of Chicago is expanding its General Education curriculum offerings with new courses in the African-American, Latino(a), and Middle-Eastern Studies to meet the needs of today’s global student.
“The objective is to provide students with an increased understanding about diverse areas and their national and international impact,” said Chancellor Wayne D. Watson. “We are committed to ensuring that CCC students are ready to succeed in today’s global society.”
Currently, Olive-Harvey College, one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago, offers an African-American Studies program. This program will be expanded with additional courses, in addition to creating Latino(a) and Middle-Eastern Studies programs across the district.
The new courses will provide students an opportunity to study in-depth the history and culture regarding the African-American, Latino(a) and Middle-Eastern migration and their impact and contribution to American culture and globalization.
The new additions to the curriculum will provide a framework for the appreciation of the national globalization and examine the growth and socioeconomic effect of diversity in the United States, Watson said.
“The City Colleges of Chicago, through the expansion of the curriculum in these three areas, is meeting the demands of the 21st Century,” Watson said. “We are going one step further to insure that our curriculum is synchronized with the increasing rate of change evidenced by the globalization process.”
City Colleges will be hiring full-time and adjunct professors to staff the new courses.
