Support the People of Haiti: An important message from Chancellor Deidra Lewis regarding the earthquake in Haiti
As we all are painfully aware, on Tuesday afternoon January 12th, the worst earthquake in 200 years - 7.0 in magnitude - struck heavily populated areas in and around the Caribbean capital city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This earthquake left in its wake devastating destruction, homelessness, injury, and loss of life throughout the country. Here in Chicago, many of our friends and neighbors are searching and waiting for word from loved ones in Haiti.
On behalf of the City Colleges of Chicago, I offer our support and heartfelt sympathy to both the people affected by the disaster in Haiti as well as their many friends and relatives in the Chicago area.
The City of Chicago has a sizeable Haitian community, and the City Colleges family has a significant number of students and staff of Haitian descent. This is their time of need.
Many organizations have mobilized to assist the relief and rebuilding efforts in Haiti. Our colleges have mobilized as well. I urge all members of the City Colleges community to join in these efforts and give what you can. We have compiled a list of organizations that are working on the ground in Haiti providing food and water, temporary shelter, medical care, help for children, and other urgently needed support. The list is available at: Haiti Relief Organizations
Other members of the City Colleges community undoubtedly will be organizing and participating in additional initiatives to aid Haiti in the days ahead. I urge all members of the community to engage and support these efforts. Our help has never been more urgently needed.
Deidra J. Lewis
Interim Chancellor
