Englewood Gains New Culinary Option as Sikia Opens for Lunch on Kennedy-King College Campus

Englewood Gains New Culinary Option as Sikia Opens for Lunch on Kennedy-King College Campus

8/30/2012 12:00 AM

Chicago, IL – Starting next Wednesday, those who live and work in the Englewood neighborhood will have a new lunchtime restaurant option featuring global contemporary cuisine with table service priced affordably. Operated by the student-chefs at the Washburne Culinary Institute, Sikia Restaurant will begin serving lunch to the public on Wednesday, September 5.

Located on the campus of Kennedy-King College at 740 West 63rd Street, Sikia will be open for lunch at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. three times a week from Wednesday through Friday. In addition to offering lunch, Sikia is also available for private functions within its 4,000 square-foot space.

All of the food will be prepared and served by senior-level Washburne Culinary Institute students. The opportunity to work at Sikia is a final project before the students graduate and obtain culinary positions, says Kristopher Murray, Executive Director and Executive Chef of Washburne Culinary Institute.

“It’s a great opportunity for the students to execute the fundamentals of cuisine that they have learned and be able to serve the public in an environment that will allow them to gain additional hands-on experience before they graduate,” Murray said.

The restaurant menu will feature a three-course plated global contemporary cuisine which may include items such as Caribbean Salad, Moroccan Chicken and Empanadas at a cost of under $10. Customers can pay $7 for three courses or pay a la carte: first course: $4, second course: $6, and third course: $4. Beverages will cost an additional $2.

“We are excited to be able to open Sikia for lunch to serve not only our faculty, staff, and students, but to offer the community a quality, affordable meal which reflects Washburne’s high standards for quality and service,” says Joyce Ester, President of Kennedy-King College.

Sikia is one of two restaurants managed and operated by Washburne. The Parrot Cage Restaurant, which is located at 7059 South Shore Drive, is consistently named as one of OpenTable’s Diner Choice top restaurants for brunch in Chicago.
