The Department of Exercise Science and Sports Studies provides students with instructions to sit for the ACE Certified Personal Trainer Exam and plans to offer certification opportunities in physical therapy assistant, occupational therapy assistant, and massage therapy in the future.

Description of Programs
The Exercise Science & Sports Studies offers a variety of academic programs focused on human well-being and health maintenance. Courses and programs range from personal training and wellness to physical therapy and massage therapy. Our state-of-the-art curriculum and facilities work to enhance learning outcomes of Malcolm X College students to become competent professionals.
Personal Training Basic Certificate
This two semester certificate program provides the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career as a personal trainer or small group exercise instructor. The curriculum provides the basic foundational skills needed to assess human body mechanics and the ability to develop and implement exercise training programs designed to improve and maintain health-related components of fitness and performance. The curriculum entails a 12 week practicum for students to obtain practical experience in a commercial setting preparing them to enter the profession upon certificate completion. Students are prepared to sit for the Personal Trainer Certification exam from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Employment opportunities include personal trainer, groups exercise instructor, entry-level positions at community recreational centers, YMCA, commercial fitness clubs, and health clubs.
The Personal Training Basic Certificate program provides students with instruction to sit for the NASM Certified Personal Trainer Exam.

Massage Therapy Advanced Certificate
Provides the educational background required for pursuing a career as a massage therapist. The curriculum covers the foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to function as a licensed massage therapist. The program focuses on student development in therapist-client communication, ethical massage practice, professionalism, business skills, self-care practices, and cultural competence.
