CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND THE SYLLABUS

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND THE SYLLABUS

In this section, you will find documents pertaining to syllabus creation.

CREATING OR REVISING A MASTER SYLLABUS

Master Syllabus Template

MasterSyllabusTemplateSpring2014.doc

To create or revise a course, a master syllabus is used. To assist you in writing a master syllabus, use this standard template, which contains the core elements found in a master syllabus, e.g. Course Title, Credit/Contact Hours, Catalog Course Description, Course Objectives, Student Learning Outcomes, Recommended Methods of Evaluation, Recommended Grading Scale, Recommended Textbook/Materials and Topical Outline, among others.

The course master syllabus is the one used to obtain articulation with four-year colleges and universities, and to obtain approval from the Illinois Community College Board and the Illinois Articulation Initiative (to facilitate transfer from one participating college or university to another in order to complete a baccalaureate degree). This is the syllabus referred to in the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) Course Master File.

Note: The master syllabus contains all of the core elements that appear in the instructor syllabus. The instructor syllabus also contains 1) college information, e.g. policies and support services, as well as 2) instructor information, e.g., policies, specific grading scales, methods of assessment, required textbook and materials, assignments, and class calendar, among other information.

A Guide for Writing a Master Course Syllabus

AGuideForWritingAMasterCourseSyllabusSpring2014.pdf

The guide for a master course syllabus lists the core elements required in a standard master course syllabus. The guide also provides descriptions for each item based on the Administrative Rules of the Illinois Community College Board (October, 2008) and Program Approval Manual (September, 2013). (See Curriculum Development Links.)

A Guide for Calculating Class Minutes

CalculatingClassMinutes.pdf

To determine the contact to credit hour requirements for courses, and the exact number of instructional contact minutes a course meets, use this guide. It provides information on how to calculate the required number of instructional contact hours per credit hour awarded, which includes lecture and lab hours. (For additional information, see ICCB Program Manual, Section II – Courses)

CREATING OR REVISING AN INSTRUCTOR SYLLABUS

A Guide for Writing an Instructor Syllabus

AGuideforWritinganInstructorSyllabusSpring2014.pdf

The course master syllabus is the foundation for the instructor syllabus. All required information supplied in the course master syllabus is used, along with an addendum of college information (e.g., policies and resources), as well as an addendum of instructor and course information. The instructor course syllabus is distributed to the students at the beginning of the semester. It includes instructor-specific information, which summarizes an instructor’s individual course requirements.
