CCC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Win NJCAA Region IV Division I Tournament

WHAT: Both City Colleges of Chicago’s Malcolm X College (MXC) men’s and women’s Basketball Teams (the MXC Lady Hawks and Hawks) have won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV Division I Tournament.  This marks the third consecutive year that the Lady Hawks have held this title, while the Hawks have captured the win for the first time since their 1995-1996 season. If the teams win the District Championship this weekend, they advance to compete at Nationals.


WHEN: Saturday, March 9th  

  • 3 p.m.: Malcolm X Lady Hawks take on Williston State College (North Dakota)

  • 5 p.m.: Hawks will play Mineral Area College (Missouri)
WHERE: Malcolm X College, 1900 West Van Buren Street, Chicago, IL  

MORE INFO: Entering the NJCAA Regional IV finals with a 20-5 season record and ranked #2 in the region, the Lady Hawks upset the #1 ranked Highland Community College Cougars on March 4th with a final score of 84 to 78 and have now advanced to the NJCAA District Championship.  Jaleesa Armstrong lead the team with an amazing 42 points, five assists and five steals, and captured the “Most Valuable Player” award, while Mariah Jordan scored an impressive 18 points and 14 rebounds.  She, along with Jordan Whitaker made the “Division I Women’s All-Tournament Team.”

Ranked at #3 in the men’s division, the MXC Hawks entered the Regional tournament with a 21-11 season record to take on the #4 ranked Kankakee Cavaliers.  The Hawks captured the NJCAA Region IV Div. I title March 4th for the first time in over a decade with a final score of 91 to 81.  Montrice McKnight scored 24 points, and captured the “Most Valuable Player” award, while teammates Jeremiah Moore and Maurice Alexander (who lead the team with an incredible 25 points) made the “Division I Men’s All-Tournament Team.” 

Lady Hawks head coach Kimberly McQuarter and the Hawks head coach Shawn Chism each received the region’s “Coach of the Year” award. This is the fourth time McQuarter has won this award.
