She profiled Ivan Vazquez, a Mexican immigrant who served two tours of duty, in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. Ivan enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school and is now pursuing a civilian career at Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago. He enrolled in an associate’s degree program in January, and wants to become an EMT. Ivan shared his story about the road back to school, the supports he's found at Wright, and his advice for other veterans.
Gomez also interviewed Ivan's academic advisor Alejandro Herrero, who has helped Ivan chart his path to success at the college. Ivan has taken advantage of Wright's Veterans Services Center. The Center, staffed by a full-time veterans services specialist who is himself a veteran, offers a variety of resources to help students reach their educational and civilian career goals.
