Univision: City Colleges Expands Veterans Services to Support College, Career Success

4/30/2013 12:00 AM

Univision reporter Paula Gomez visited Wright College to report on how City Colleges is providing prospective and current veteran students with the academic, financial, and career supports they need to find success in the civilian world.

Watch the Spanish-language story here.

She profiled Ivan Vazquez, a Mexican immigrant who served two tours of duty, in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. Ivan enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school and is now pursuing a civilian career at Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago. He enrolled in an associate’s degree program in January, and wants to become an EMT. Ivan shared his story about the road back to school, the supports he's found at Wright, and his advice for other veterans.

Gomez also interviewed Ivan's academic advisor Alejandro Herrero, who has helped Ivan chart his path to success at the college. Ivan has taken advantage of Wright's Veterans Services Center. The Center, staffed by a full-time veterans services specialist who is himself a veteran, offers a variety of resources to help students reach their educational and civilian career goals.

The resources include:
  • information about state and federal education grants
  • how to get credit for military training and experience
  • a place for veterans to gather and study together
  • details about businesses looking to employ veterans
  • VA benefits information
