City Colleges of Chicago Health Information The City Colleges of Chicago has been actively engaged in a campaign to raise students' awareness of HIV/AIDS and STD's (Sexual Transmitted Diseases). Why, you may ask. Statistics reflect that three of our seven colleges are located in neighborhoods with HIV & STD infections higher than in the entire state of Illinois. Consequently, the City Colleges embarked on a campaign to educate our student population to the facts regarding HIV/AIDS and STD's with the intention to encourage our students to adopt healthier lifestyles.Working in partnership with the Cook County Ruth Rothstein CORE Center, Let's Talk Let's Test Foundation, and other community-based organizations the City Colleges of Chicago offers free HIV/AIDS and STD testing during registration each semester, sponsors educational workshops and free testing programs during the school year, and provides information to students to access additional confidential health care at neighborhood agencies. What is HIV? HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) weakens the immune system, which is the body's natural defense against illness. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. What is AIDS? AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. There is currently no cure for AIDS. How is HIV spread? HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact or by sharing needles. HIV can also be passed from a pregnant mother to her baby, during birth or while breastfeeding. Why should I get tested? There is no way to determine whether or not you have HIV without getting tested. How can I protect myself from HIV?
