Hispanic Serving Institutions Developing Program
This program is a funded by the U.S. Dept. of Education. There are no costs to the students. Allows for the expansion of educational opportunities for, and improve the academic attainment of Hispanics and underrepresented students; and will expand and enhance the academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability of the college in educating the Hispanic students and other low income individuals complete post secondary degrees.
This new initiative is designed to increase Hispanic and other underrepresented students’ success, retention, and enrollment by:
· Institutionalizing Learning Communities that will provide Hispanic and other low income students with academic support they need and encourage their integration into college.
· Transforming the entry-level curriculum so that at risk students can develop the basic skills they need to succeed in college – level programs.
· Institutionalizing a comprehensive professional development program to increase faculty/staff expertise in modern teaching/retention strategies that address the needs of Hispanic and other minority students.
· Providing faculty and staff with access to the technology and electronic services they need in order to efficiently and effectively serve the colleges' large and highly disadvantaged student population.
· Developing and testing a pilot Summer Bridge Program for GED/ESL Adult Education students to encourage the successful transition of students into college degree or certificate programs.
· Piloting a Freshman Learning Community (Tracks I and II) that will be supported by modifying the Developmental and General Education curriculum to reflect Learning Community principles and alternative teaching strategies through the use of technology that address a diversity of learning styles and needs.
· Transforming student services for at risk freshman students by incorporating in-depth career planning, intrusive advisement, early alert and warning, and accurate tracking throughout the matriculation process.
