University Transit Pass (U-Pass)
U-Pass offers full-time students unlimited rides on any CTA bus or CTA trains during an academic term. Use your U-Pass on CTA bus/rail system anytime, anywhere, for any reason.
- U-PASS replaces cash for all CTA fares - no cash is needed.
- U-PASS does not require a transfer or surcharge.
- U-Pass is valid for travel on PACE suburban buses.
- U-PASS is for full-time students only. (The cards of students who drop to part-time status will be deactivated.)
Rules & Conditions: U-Pass is limited to exclusive use by the original full-time student card owner. U-Pass may not be shared. If any conditions are violated, the pass will be confiscated for the remaining term without reimbursement.
U-Pass Distribution
Students can pick up their pre-printed U-Pass before each term, during a college determined scheduled time. At distribution, new program enrollees are photographed and that day, receive their card. If a student misses distribution, a college administrator will verify full-time status and complete a CTA U-Pass Issuance Application or Late Issuance form.

U-Pass Replacement Procedures
Lost or Stolen
Students should bring their valid student I.D. and $35 (cash, credit card or money order) replacement fee to the CTA general offices. A replacement U-Pass will be issued and sent to the college. CTA will replace lost or stolen U-Pass cards only once per academic term.
Captured in Fare Equipment On the bus
When the U-Pass is mistakenly inserted into the bus dollar slot, it is the student's responsibility to complete an operator provided captured fare report. Students should bring the report along with a valid student I.D. to the CTA general offices. Students will not receive a temporary card, however a transfer will be provided.
At the rail station
After the U-Pass is captured at the station, students are to locate a customer assistant to complete a captured fare report and receive a free transit card to complete their ride. The student should bring the completed report and valid student I.D. to the CTA general offices to request a new U-Pass. CTA will provide a temporary transit card and a replacement U-Pass will be issued and sent to the college. If the student fails to get a report, it may take up to two weeks to replace the U-Pass. Should this happen, students must call 1-888-Your-CTA to track down their report to receive a new U-Pass.
Defective, Damaged or Demagnetized (Code 13) When the CTA fare equipment cannot read a U-Pass, the bus operator will allow the student to complete the ride for free however the cardholder must bring the defective, damaged or demagnetized U-Pass along with a valid student I.D. to the CTA general offices to request a replacement. CTA will immediately issue a temporary transit card and a replacement U-Pass will be sent to the college.
Hotlisted (Code 57) At the beginning of each term, each college is asked to submit a database of students who changed from full-time to part-time status and those part-time cards are deactivated. If a student is accidentally put on this list, they must contact their college to verify their full-time status. If a mistake was made, the college needs to notify the U-Pass representative and they will contact a separate internal CTA division to activate the card within 48 hours.
