City Colleges offers programs that allow you to use life experience as college credit. Experience in the military, Advanced Placement courses, and work experience can all count toward a college degree.

 

Advanced Placement (AP)

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program consists of 32 college-level courses and exams in 19 disciplines for highly motivated students in secondary schools. AP exams are offered throughout the world each May.


College Credit for Military Training

The following can be evaluated for college credit at City Colleges:

  • Military Occupation Specialties (MOS’s)
  • NER
  • Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES)
  • Specified CLEP test
  • Basic Military Training

CLEP

CLEP allows students to earn a degree by study and experience outside the classroom and is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the country. General and SUBJECT exams are available. Application


Criminal Justice Exams

City Colleges of Chicago offers proficiency tests covering some of the Chicago Police Academy training courses. Students with similar on-the job learning experiences or who have completed training at the Academy may earn college credit toward criminal justice classes. Application


DANTES

Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES) offers tests in a wide variety of technological subjects such as electronics and technical writing. Application


Emergency Medical Services Paramedic Training

Students may earn college credit at City Colleges of Chicago based on completed Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training. Application


Medical Terminology Test

This test is designed to cover the knowledge and objectives of the City Colleges of Chicago Biology 120 course for three (3) credit hours. City Colleges of Chicago students may take this test upon enrollment. Application


Portfolio/Credit for Prior Learning

Designed to award credit for what a student already knows as it relates to college level courses. Student may earn college credit for work performed in their professional lives, community involvement, hobbies and travel, or courses taken at non-collegiate institutions. Students must meet with their advisor to discuss learning experiences before entering the program.


Licensed/Practical Nursing Bridge Program

Students with previous LPN education can earn 7 credit hours each for Nursing 101 and Nursing 102. Certain requirements apply. Application


Evaluation of Foreign Credentials

City Colleges of Chicago will evaluate transcripts through Educational Perspectives for course equivalent credit for enrolled students. Applications are available through advisors. Application
