Chinese Studies - World Languages
China is home to 1.3 billion people and Mandarin is now the most spoken language in the world. Whatever field you choose, business, law, healthcare, or even animation, China and Chinese will play a part in your career. The study of Mandarin at the City Colleges is the first step to understanding the country, the culture, and its people.
In Mandarin courses, you will learn to speak, understand, read and write in Mandarin from the first day. Culture is also a large component of learning any language and our faculty emphasize culture history, and social etiquette.
Courses
CHINESE 101 Introduction to Chinese – This course introduces the basic elements of Mandarin Chinese that will enable the students to develop communicative language skills, basic conversational skills, as well as grammar and vocabulary knowledge in Chinese. Intensive drills on sound and tones, vocabulary, and sentence patterns in meaningful contexts will be used in order for the students to communicate appropriately and accurately in authentic contexts. The course will introduce students to the diverse culture, history, and social etiquette of China. Prerequisites: Placement Test or Consent of Department Chairperson. Credit Hours: 4
CHINESE 102 Chinese II – This course is designed for students who have acquired some oral proficiency, but lack formal training and literacy. It teaches more advanced grammar rules while reviewing basic ones. Students will learn how to use a bilingual dictionary to assist their reading of essays and short stories. They will learn to write notes, letters, and paragraphs. The course will introduce students to the diverse culture, history, and social etiquette of China. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Chinese 101, Placement Test, or Consent of Department Chairperson. Credit Hours: 4
CHINESE 103 Chinese III - This course is designed for students who have acquired some oral proficiency and basic grammar rules of Mandarin Chinese. It will emphasize four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing in culturally authentic situations. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Chinese 102, Placement Test, or Consent of Department Chairperson. Credit Hours: 4
CHINESE 104 Chinese IV – This course provides intensive work in the use of Mandarin Chinese through listening, speaking, reading, and writing and through continued enhancement of the cultural awareness intrinsic to those four skills. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Chinese 103, Placement Test, or Consent of Department Chairperson. Credit Hours: 4 IAI Course
