English, Literature, and Speech Department

MISSION STATEMENT

The English, Literature, and Speech Department of Malcolm X College offers both required and elective courses designed to cultivate critical thinking, foster self-esteem, and inspire originality and creativity.  From sustained emphasis on thoughtfulness in self-expression, the connection between grammar and meaning, professionalism, and assessment, students leave our classes with the tools needed to be successful on every life pathway.                                                                          

As committed faculty, we aim to promote deep learning that enriches the student experience.  Our philosophy is that education is a communal responsibility; therefore, the English, Literature, and Speech Department works to provide learning environments that prepare students for professional competence in their designated fields while imbuing them with a reflective and empathetic understanding of varying perspectives. The main question that animates this characteristic of Inclusive Pedagogy asks that the educator first consider the strengths students bring to the learning situation (Teemant & Pinnegar, 2019).

Department Learning Outcomes

​​Overall program objectives for the discipline include:                    

 

  1. Standardization of instruction and student writing and assessment   
  2. Maintain departmental and district standards in writing   
  3. Develop comprehensive guidelines for grammar style and syntax   
  4. Provide exposure to more critical and theoretical texts and a means for synthesizing them into meaningful contexts   
  5. Provide opportunities for accelerated process for acquiring writing and reading skills   
  6. Develop curriculum and transition students from non-credit to credit-to-credit courses   
  7. Incorporate technology as a teaching strategy   
  8. Promote the use of embedded tutors (especially in developmental courses)   
  9. Expose students to culturally enriching experiences inside and outside of the classroom; provide professional development for instructors.
