Sterile Processing Technician - Careers and Resources

Program Schedule

The program consists one semester.

During the semester, courses will meet on campus two days per week at their assigned days and times during the day. Clinical rotations will take place in various sterile processing departments three days per week, either on a first or second shift basis.

Clinical Guidelines in Sterile Processing Technician

Only shifts offered by our clinical affiliates will be available. Clinical affiliate locations and shifts. Clinical assignmentsare assigned by the Program Director and Clinical Coordinator. Students must be available to accept clinical assignments at any locationwithin the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Transportation, to and from clinical sites, are the sole responsibility of the student. Students can be placed up to 50 miles fromthe school and the Clinical Coordinator wil work closely with the students to work the most ideal site for clinical rotations. Students cannot be utilized as staff or be paid by their clinical site during clinical rotations. Refusal to accept a clinical rotation assignment for any reason will result indismissal fromtheprogram.

Students must be able to lift up to 30 lbs., stand for an extended period of time, and be able to complete all assigned tasks throughout the duration of their shift. Additionally, the clinical experience may place the student in stressful situations as they undertake responsibilities and duties that have a major impact on patient outcomes and institutional benchmarks. Students must be able to demonstrate rational and appropriate professional behavior under these potential stressful situations with a calm and acceptable demeanor.

The student is expected to attend clinicals each week on their assigned days and times. Students are considered as having completed all program requirements when they have achieved a grade of “C” or better in all courses listed.
