The Medical Billing Program-BC program is designed to provide the student with the suitable education and hands-on skills necessary for entry-level positions as medical insurance billers for offices, clinics, billing services, and other facilities.

The Medical Billing Program-BC can help you start your healthcare career as a medical biller with numerous job opportunities including positions such as billing claim specialists, billing supervisors, medical collection specialists, medical insurance adjustors, and clerical positions across various healthcare settings. The students learn how to accurately process health insurance claims along with an emphasis on all aspects of medical insurance, including plan options, payer requirements, state and federal regulations, abstracting of source documents, accurate completion of claims, and coding of diagnoses and procedures/services. In addition, our students acquire knowledge about major insurance programs, healthcare delivery system in the United States, and federal healthcare legislation. Content of this program also includes study of origin and purpose, content, order, analysis and use of medical records, methods of retrieving, numbering, retrieving, and retention of health information. Focus of the program is on correlating health information with billing procedures in different healthcare settings.

Program Mission 
The mission of the Medical Billing Program is to graduate competent and ethical medical billers with the knowledge and the skills satisfying needs of entry-level positions in this field. It is also the department’s mission to support the MXC mission by offering quality medical billing course designed to prepare students to demonstrate the skills and behaviors compatible with those of professional medical billers. 

Admission Requirements

  • Be admitted to Malcolm X College
  • A GPA of 2.0 for any prior college courses
  • Students 18 years or older, who are either high school graduates or have completed GED program


Certification

Upon the completion of the Medical Billing Program the student will be eligible to sit for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) examination administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
