The radiographer uses procedures by which x-radiation is used to obtain radiographs for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Procedures can show internal organs—heart, blood vessels, stomach, intestines, kidneys, and abnormalities of the bones.

 

Careers in Radiography

​The Radiography Program provides knowledge and skill development in the art and science of producing quality radiographs for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Career advancement for experienced Radiologic Technologists with further education can lead to positions in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computerized Tomography and Mammography. Students may matriculate through an institution of higher learning to earn a baccalaureate degree. The program is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. 74% (119/161) of the students enrolled in the program the past five years have successfully completed. The program has demonstrated an 88% (104/118) ARRT national certification exam pass rate for the past five years. 100% (95/95) of the graduates surveyed the last five years find employment within 1 year of graduation. The average salary for an entry level radiographer is $22 per hour. Salary is based on size and location of the medical facility.                                                      

Certification

The Radiography Program prepares students to become certified and licensed Radiographers. Certification is granted by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists upon successful completion of the national board examination and licensure is granted by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. The program uses the American Society of Radiologic Technologists’ Curriculum Guide.

                                           

Accreditation

Malcolm X College Radiologic Technology Program is accredited by the Joint Review Commission on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The program received the maximum 8-year accreditation in 2018.​

Admission Requirements

Admission is competitive. In order to be considered for Admission to the Radiography Associate Degree Program, a student must:                                                         

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Admissions Cumulative 2.50 GPA for fall 2018 admit term
  • Admissions Cumulative 2.70 GPA for spring 2019 admit term and beyond
  • Submit all official transcripts from colleges outside of City College of Chicago to the MXC Office of Registrar Services.
  • Complete the following prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better
    • Mathematics 118 or higher
    • Biology 116
      • Biology 226 and Biology 227 could substitute for Biology 116
    • HEAPRO
      • Biology 120 could substitute for HEAPRO 102

Physical Requirements Needed for Successful Performance in the Clinical Area                                                    

A person working in the field as a radiographer may be required to perform many extraneous and laborious tasks. Patient care in the clinical area requires excellent communication and language skills.                   

Therefore all students must be able to:                                                           

  • Stand on their feet for approximately 8 hours.                                                         

  • Push and/or pull patients with weights that may exceed 200 lbs.                                                         

  • Communicate in English well enough so that you can be understood by others, and others can understand you.                                                         

  • Execute both hand and pedal dexterity.                                                         

  • Give directions and respond to patient requests.                                                         

  • Operate portable equipment.                                                        

  • Visually critique a film.                                                         

  • Exhibit good hearing ability and is able to exercise good body mechanics.                                                         

  • Lift and carry various accessory equipment.
