Advanced Placement (AP) Credit

Overview

The Advanced Placement (AP) program is administered by the College Board and offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. This program has been in existence since 1955 and colleges and universities have been granting college credit to students depending on the score of the AP examinations. Cost of the exam will vary by high school.

The AP scores are reported on a 5-point scale as follows:

5 = extremely well qualified
4 = well qualified
3 = qualified
2 = possibly qualified
1 = no recommendation

City Colleges of Chicago grants credit for scores of 3 and higher. The specific credit granted is listed in the grid below.

Sending AP Score Reports to City Colleges

After taking an AP Exam, the College Board sends the score reports to colleges or universities that are designated on the examination answer sheet. The score report is cumulative and includes scores for all the AP Exams ever taken, unless a student requests that one or more scores be withheld from a college or canceled. Additional copies of the Advanced Placement exam score reports can be ordered on the College Board site.

AP Course Equivalencies

Guidelines for awarding college credit for AP are based upon CCC faculty review of the AP course curriculum and an evaluation of learning outcomes. Faculty recommendations have established the course equivalencies for awarding college credit at CCC.

Students admitted to City Colleges of Chicago will be awarded course credit in the amounts indicated below. Official Advanced Placement (AP) score reports must be submitted to the Office of Admissions when enrolling at CCC in order to receive credit.
