Year Up PLA Policy
Year Up Chicago is a one-year workforce development program for urban young adults ages 18–24. They work to bridge the Opportunity Divide – the gap between those who have access to education, resources, and livable-wage employment, and those who do not.
In 2016, City Colleges of Chicago faculty undertook an assessment of the learning that happens in the Year Up Chicago program and recommended that City Colleges award college-level course credit when Year Up Chicago graduates enroll in a degree program at any of the seven City Colleges.
This credit is assigned as Prior Learning Assessment, or PLA, when posted on the CCC transcript. This means that the credit was not transferred from another college, but it is college-level learning and will count as either meeting specific course requirements or as electives toward a CCC degree. There will not be letter grades attached to that credit.
To receive this credit at City Colleges of Chicago, students must:
1. Apply, gain admission, and enroll at one of the seven CCC locations.
2. Have completed all of the accepted courses listed below with a grade of C or higher.
3. Have their ACE (Credly) transcript sent to the Records Office at the college you plan to attend. Students will need to request that the credit be awarded at the Records by the office and requesting the credit be awarded.
4. Speak about the credit with their academic advisors to make sure they do not repeat the courses when they enroll.
To order an ACE (Credly) transcript, YU students should go online to their Credly account using their personal email. Click here for step-by-step instructions on how to electronically send a transcript to a school through Credly.
