Tests Administered
- CCC Placement Test – All new students are required to complete placement tests in the areas of English and math before registering for classes unless waivers are applicable. Students will need their CCC ID and student portal credentials to take the placement exams.
- English – Read-to-Write (RTW)
- RTW can be taken once per year and scores are valid for 2 years.
- Please allow approximately 3 hours to take the English placement exam.
- Students who participate in approved non-credit workshops or Level Up may be able to retake RTW sooner than one year’s time.
- Early College students can take RTW once per City College semester – twice per year.
- Math – ALEKS
- ALEKS scores are valid for 1 year.
- Please allow approximately 90 minutes to take the Math placement exam, which will consist of 30 questions.
- Students are limited to a single ALEKS math assessment per year. An ALEKS math assessment provides for up to five (5) attempts with required time in the learning module between attempts.
- English – Read-to-Write (RTW)
- Language Placement Test – for students taking their first world language course at City Colleges
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exams
- CLEP Foreign Language Exam - students may earn credit by successfully completing a CLEP proficiency exam (Spanish and French languages)
- CLEP General Exam - students may earn credit by successfully completing proficiency exams; 33 exams in 5 subject areas are offered
- Proctored testing for Online Learning (formerly The Center for Distance Learning)courses
- Proctored exams in collaboration with other colleges/universities ($20 fee)
- General Educational Development (GED) examination
- High School Equivalency Test (HiSET)
- Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE)
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Test Accommodations for students with disabilities are given in a manner consistent with the applicable requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. This includes offering and administering the test in a time, place and manner that is accessible, including the provision of appropriate modifications and auxiliary aids and services.
Examples of appropriate modifications and auxiliary aids and services include a change in the length of time of examination for individuals with learning disabilities and Braille or large print examinations and answer sheets or qualified readers for individuals with visual impairments.
Accommodations must be approved by the Disability Access Center prior to test administration.
