A. Yes The Malcolm X College Dental Hygiene Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Commission is a specialized accrediting agency recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. The Commission conducts the accreditation and site visit process and recommends accreditation. The Malcolm X College Dental Hygiene Program’s policies, standards, and curricula are modeled after the Commission’s guidelines.
Current Program Accreditation Status: Approval (without reporting requirements): An accreditation classification granted to an educational program indicating that the program achieves or exceeds the basic requirements for accreditation.

A. Applying to the Dental Hygiene Program is a 2-step process. Initial applications to the selective enrollment DH Program are accepted between October 15th and December 15th. If the minimum requirements are met, you will be sent an email to submit a dental hygiene application online. The deadline for the 2nd step will be January 15th. As part of the online application, applicants are required to interview a practicing dental hygienist. The questions can be asked virtually or in person. Interview questions can be found on the homepage under the Interview Questions 2024 Application link. Please upload the completed interview form to your online application.
Q. How long does it take to complete the MXC Dental Hygiene Program?
A. The Dental Hygiene Program is a full-time program. The curriculum is two full calendar years (6 semesters), beginning in the Summer term. All didactic and laboratory classes are held Monday thru Friday from 8am-7pm. Additionally, in the Fall and Spring semesters, first year students must complete 6-9 hours of pre-clinical/clinical work per week from 8am-6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Second year students must complete 12-16 hours of clinical work per week Monday through Friday including evening clinics.
Q. Are there expectations outside the classroom?
A. Yes. The dental hygiene program is academically challenging. Each week students should expect to study at least 1 hour for every credit hour a course is worth. For example, if a course is 3 credit hours students should expect to study at a minimum, 3 hours per week for that course.
A. Yes. You can work, but due to the demands of the program it is discouraged. It is recommended that students plan to not work for the 2 years they are in the program because students must earn a final grade of C or better in each course to continue in the program.
A. Yes. A dental hygiene license is required to work in this profession. This license requires that students pass the Dental Hygiene National Board Computerized Exam, a computerized patient case exam, and pass a clinical exam.
The Dental Hygiene Program may admit up to 30 students each year however, due to the impact of COVID-19, we reserve the right to reduce the class size.
