Malcolm X College offers EMT training during the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. This course is a comprehensive introduction to the emergency medical services and the treatment of the sick and injured.

This course is developed in accordance with the U.S National EMS Education Standards and the NHTSA National EMS Scope of Practice Model for EMT instruction. It focuses on developing the knowledge, skills and abilities that will allow each student to recognize the nature or extent of a patient’s condition and to administer appropriate emergency medical care to stabilize the patient’s condition, lift, move, position and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury and transport them safely to the proper medical facility. It is designed for individuals seeking to further their career in emergency medicine. Students frequently continue their education and go on to become paramedics, nurses and physicians. After successful completion, students may sit for the EMT Licensing Examination.
Program Mission
It is the mission of the Malcolm X College EMS Department to educate and inspire our students and prepare students of the community to serve their community as health care professionals in Emergency Medical Services.
Admission Requirements
- Hold a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate
- 18 years of age or older.
- Must be eligible to enroll in or have passed English 101 or successful completion of EMT 100 – Emergency Medical Technician-First Responder Training course.
- Interview with EMT Coordinator recommended.
Certification
The EMT Program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health through the medical oversight of EMS Region XI Resource Hospital, JHS Cook County Hospital – EMS Department.
