Malcolm X College offers a number of courses within the Fire Science Curriculum.

There are two Fire Science degree programs:

  • Fire Science Management – This program provides course curricula which enhances management skills in Fire Service.  This program offers all necessary courses to attain certifications as Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office. This track culminates in an AAS degree.
  • Fire and Emergency Service Operations   This program focuses on emergency operations related courses.  This path is recommended for those students who want a degree in fire science but are not sworn members of the fire service. This track culminates in an AAS degree.

Because of the many new and evolving challenges facing fire and emergency services today, many current and future  members are opting to enhance their training and experience by obtaining a formal education in fire science operations and fire service management. This program has been developed in collaboration with the Chicago Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.  Courses are largely taught by faculty instructors that are experienced fire fighters from the Chicago Fire Department and surrounding areas.

  • For returning students who have not been away for more than a year, you may be eligible for a "Permission Code" which would allow you to register for classes online.  Contact the program coordinator to receive one.
  • FYI to current fire fighters – a plan is in the works to allow you to receive as much as 20  college credit hours towards your AAS in Fire Science for several certificates you received from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.  This would include 11 hours after graduating the Fire Academy with EMT:B, and Basic Operations Fire Fighter or Fire Fighter II certificates.
  • Our course approvals from the State Fire Marshal’s Office for Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II, will end June 2019.
