About Our Program

"I am because we are, and we are because I am."                   Ubuntu Proverb

Our Mission

To build stronger communities by collaborating with men of African descent within Malcolm X College to improve academic achievement, self-esteem, social competence, self-efficacy, student retention, and graduation rates for male students of African descent. We intend to provide positive male role models, encourage self-respect, create a sense of brotherhood, and build healthy relationships.

Our Goal

To close the opportunity gap by recruiting men of African descent to act as mentors for students of African descent. We are an all-inclusive program dedicated to offering academic, professional, and social support to all male students of African descent. To address the factors of inequity in education that hinder the intellectual growth of this underserved population, we intend to foster student growth and promote the following core values: accountability, community, diversity, empowerment, learning, and respect.

Our Plan

To build positive relationships between male students of African descent and African American male mentors within Malcolm X College. We provide mentees with academic support services that foster a sense of community, leadership, collaboration, self-efficacy, and self-awareness. Our mentors are employed in diverse areas and positions throughout Malcolm X College, including deans, program directors, faculty members, advisors, IT specialists, and security personnel. Their broad base provides mentees with access to a wealth of knowledge and gives them insight into potential career opportunities. Although IAAM is an initiative created within Malcolm X College, we plan to become the blueprint whereby other colleges and universities build upon.
