Mission statement:

The Personal Fitness Training program at Malcolm X provides a quality education to prepare diverse students to become highly competent and successful fitness professionals, able to stand out in the competitive fitness and wellness environment.  The program seeks to set the education standard in personal fitness training continually evolving with industry trends.

Program goals:

  1. Students are prepared to sit and pass a nationally accredited certified personal training exam through National Academy of Sports Medicine and/or American Council on Exercise.
  2. Students graduating with a Basic Certificate in Personal Fitness Training from Malcolm X are recognized by professionals in the fitness industry in Chicago.
  3. Students are prepared with technical skills in order to independently perform fitness assessments and write exercise programs for healthy populations.
  4. Students acquire the necessary softs skills and professionalism required to obtain a personal fitness training position upon graduation.

Student learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate technical skills necessary to work one on one with a client
  2. Demonstrate technical skills necessary to teach participants in a small group fitness class
  3. Recognize personal training scope of practice
  4. Explain the legal practice boundaries for a personal trainer
  5. Perform body composition assessment techniques
  6. Perform movement screening assessment techniques
  7. Plan, write and implement exercise programs for the general healthy population
  8. Plan, write and implement safe exercise programs for populations with chronic illnesses
  9. Plan, write and implement safe exercise programs for populations with musculoskeletal issues
  10. Identify the role of behavior change in applying to exercise programming for clients
  11. Identify the role of behavior change in applying to exercise programming for clients
  12. Apply business practices for success as a personal trainer
  13. Describe muscular anatomy as it relates to functional exercises
  14. Describe articular joint anatomy and function in terms of planes of motion
  15. Generalize nutrition education for clients within scope of practice for personal trainers
