About
This evolving field combines disciplines of medicine, computer technology, and information management. Working in the HIT field offers a meaningful work environment and the opportunity of continuous learning and advancement.Our stackable degree path allows students to apply all credits earned in the Medical Billing-Basic Certificate (BC) program,to the Medical Coding-Advanced Certificate (AC) program. Upon successful completion of the Medical Coding-Advanced Certificate, students can then pursue a degree towards an Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology.
Program Accreditation
The Health Information Management accreditor of Malcolm X College is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for Associate degree in Health Information Management has been reaffirmed through 2028 – 2029 Accreditation Cycle. Mission Statement
The Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Malcolm X College, a City College of Chicago, offers an introductory career-focused educational path into the healthcare industry. This program is designed for students who aspire to become healthcare professionals in the Health Information Technology (HIT) career field, this includes professional opportunities for Medical Coders and Billers. The program is designed to prepare students to successfully attain professional coding certifications,such as the Certified Coding Assistant, (CCA), through the American Health Information Management Association and the Certified Coding Professional, Apprentice(CPC-A) through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Upon completion of the Health Information Technology (HIT) Associate’s Degree Program, students will be prepared for job opportunities within the healthcare industry.

Graduates of the Health Information Technology (HIT) Associate’s Program may consider, but are not limited the following career options:
- Medical coder/biller
- Revenue cycle specialist
- Medical documentation analyst
- Health Information Technician
- Release of Information
- Data Analyst
- Patient care coordinator
- Insurance claims clerk
- Benefits Coordinator
Admission Requirements
- A grade of "C" or higher in BIOLOGY 116; CIS 120; HIT 101, HIT 105, HIT 110
- Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Eligibility for MATH 125
- Submit official college transcripts from all colleges attended outside of City Colleges of Chicago to the Malcolm X College Office of Registrar Services
- On-campus, in-person interview
- Submit one Letter of Recommendation at the time of interview.
- Once accepted to the program and prior to registration; students must complete the following:
- Background check
- Drug screen
- Provide proof of health insurance
- Provide current immunization records
- Students need to have transportation to and from their clinical sites

Glossary of Terms
Enrollment: The number of students that are enrolled within the AAS Program for the determined year.
Enrollment Cohort: Students that are enrolled in the program for the first time are designated as the enrollment cohort for that fiscal year.
Retention: The percent of the enrolled cohort that were retained (remaining students) to the program.
Graduates: Students that completed the program in the same designated fiscal year.
Completion: The percent of the enrollment cohort that completed the degree within the 150% timeframe (eight semesters) of the program.
Exam Pass Rate: The percent of graduates who passed the licensure exam out of those who took the exam.
Job Placement Rate: The percent of graduates that are employed in Health Information Technology within the first six months after program completion.
Job Placement Data Source: Job placement data is collected by Malcolm X College’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness through a Fiscal Year Graduate and Certificate Completer Survey for all career and technical education (CTE) programs. This survey is administered through Qualtrics, between 12 or 18 months post-completion.
