About                                                             

The Mortuary Science Program at Malcolm X College prepares students to care for human remains. Students receive training in every phase of funeral service: embalming, restoration techniques, conduction of funeral services and grief facilitation for the bereaved.  

Successfully completing the curriculum and capstone course qualifies students to take the Conference Examination (National Board Exam). This is the licensing exam, which is necessary in order to intern and practice funeral directing and embalming.                                                                                                    

Program Mission                                                                  

The Mortuary Science Program at Malcolm X College prepares students to care for human remains. Students receive training in every phase of funeral service: learning embalming and restoration techniques, conduction of funeral services and grief facilitation for the bereaved.  In support of this mission, the program has adopted the following Learning Outcomes:                                                     

Upon completion of the accredited Mortuary Science Program at Malcolm X College, students will be able to:                                                       

1. Explain the importance of funeral service professionals in developing relationships with the families and communities they serve.                                               

2. Identify standards of ethical conduct in funeral service practice.                                                    

3. Interpret how federal, state, and local laws apply to funeral service in order to ensure compliance.                                 

4. Apply principles of public health and safety in the handling and preparation of human remains.                                         

5. Demonstrate technical skills in embalming and restorative art that are necessary for the preparation and handling of human remains.                                          

6. Demonstrate skills required for conducting arrangement conferences, visitations, services and ceremonies                     

7. Describe the requirements and procedures for burial, cremation, and other accepted forms of final disposition of human remains.                                

8. Describe methods to address the grief related needs of the bereaved.                                                    

9. Explain management skills associated with operating a funeral establishment.                                                    

10. Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills and research skills needed for funeral service practice.                                                 

 

Admission Requirements                           

You must be 18 years or older and submit proof of a high school graduation or GED completion in the form of an official transcript. Submit official transcript to the Malcolm X College Office of Registrar Services. You must also meet the following required pre-requisite courses:            
           
                              Achieve Grade “C” or better in Mathematics 118 or higher General Education Math            
                              Achieve Grade “C” or better in English 101           
                              Achieve Grade “C” or better in Biology 120           
                              Achieve Grade “C” or better in Biology 116       
                              Achieve Grade “C” or better in Speech 101                         

​​2. Complete the application. Demographic information requested is done so to adhere to our accrediting body (ABFSE) guidelines. This information is not used as a tool for admission. 

3. Meet the GPA of 2.75 or higher

4. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by July 14, 2023.There is a mandatory orientation session for all accepted students, you will be notified of the date upon acceptance.

After it is confirmed the applicant is qualified by MXC Admissions, the applicant will receive a Mortuary Science Admissions Packet. The applicant will upload the completed packet in the student portal.                                                                        

Other Information                                                               

Transcripts required: 
Applicants must submit their high school transcript as well as transcripts from all colleges previously attended outside City Colleges of chicago directly to the Malcolm X College Office of Registrar Services.                                                                                                              

Medical Statement of Health Status:                                           

Upon acceptance to the program, the student must provide proof of recent medical examination and it must be documented by the physician (please make copies) and proof of current health insurance and immunizations. This is only done if accepted but prior to attendance in fall classes of the third semester.

Program Schedule                                                                  

Students are admitted once a year, in the fall semester (August) for enrollment in which the applications is open from February 5, 2024 to June 30, 2024. Fall applicants are applying for the 18-month evening program. Fall applicants must meet the 18credit hour prerequisite course requirements for acceptance. All classes will be held in person at the Malcolm X College campus.
