First Year Student Experience (Interdisciplinary Studies)
Supporting our students throughout their experience, particularly in the first year.
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies offers courses aimed to support student success during enrollment at Harold Washington College. We offer three courses to build confidence, connect students with our campus supports, and to create sustainable learning communities.
Course Offerings
College Success (Intdsp 101)
College Success is a one-semester class with goals of supporting students’ transition to college. During this course students will explore their relationship to Harold Washington, learn about important on-campus student supports, and explore their role in the future.
Discover (Intdsp 104_Discover)
Discover is a one-semester trauma-informed, healing-centered course with goals of supporting students dealing with stress in their lives. During this course students will build a community of their peers to name their lived experiences, connect those experiences to the experiences of others, and develop plans to move beyond pain in their current lives. Check out this video highlighting our Discover class.
Career Exploration (Intdsp 104_Career)
Career Exploration is a one-semester class with goals of supporting students’ exploration and preparedness for their future careers. During this course students will complete a career survey, develop a more complete understanding of their future career, and work with our college’s Career Center to prepare the necessary artifacts to get them into their next steps.
