With more than 220 million speakers in 72 countries, French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and a definite advantage on the in​ternational job market. It is the official language of the United Nations, the European Union, UNESCO, NATO, the International Olympic Committee, the International Red Cross, and international courts.

Speaking French not only offers insights into the mentality and way of life of France, the world’s fifth largest economy and number-one tourist destination, but also a shared culture spanning five continents and linking countries from Canada, Switzerland, and Belgium to North and sub-Saharan Africa. Learning French opens up opportunities to study, often at almost no cost, at​ renowned French universities ranked among the best in the world. It provides a good base for learning other Romance languages like Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese as well as for improving your English, which derives half of its vocabulary from French.

Courses

FRENCH 101 First Course French—Pronunciation and basic structures, speech patterns, reading, and writing skills. Prerequisites: None. Credit Hours: 4

FRENCH 102 Second Course French—Continuation of French 101.  Prerequisites: Placement test, or grade of C or better in French 101. Credit Hours: 4

FRENCH 103 Third Course French—Review and development of basic language skills, conducted in French. Prerequisites: Placement test, or grade of C or better in French 102 AND Consent of Department Chairperson.  Credit Hours: 4   

FRENCH 104 Fourth Course French—Review of language structure and interpretation of readings, conducted in French.  Prerequisites: Placement test, or grade of C or better in French 103 AND Consent of Department Chairperson.  Credit Hours: 4   

FRENCH 206 Intensive Oral Practice French—Practice in spoken language, fluency and accuracy.   Prerequisites: Placement test, or grade of C or better in French 104, Consent of Department Chairperson.  Credit Hours: 4   

FRENCH 213 Intro to Modern Literature French—Selections from contemporary writings, conducted in French. Prerequisites: Placement test, or grade of C or better in French 104, Consent of Department Chairperson.  Credit Hours: 3   

FRENCH 214— Readings In Literature French—Works from selected historical periods, conducted in French. Prerequisites: Placement test, or grade of C or better in French 104, Consent of Department Chairperson.  Credit Hours: 3
