​HWC Local 1600 Union Scholarships                                                                                     
                                                                                                                                                              
Every year scholarship funds are raised for the purpose of awarding scholarships to the hard-working students attending Harold Washington College.
                                                                                                   
  • Local 1600 CCCTU HW Chapter Scholarships​ provides several $500-$1000 scholarships to Harold Washington college students. Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and 30 credit hours at HWC.
  • The Thomas J. McBride Scholarship was established in honor of Thomas McBride former HWC student who loved attending HWC. The McBride Scholar will receive a $500-$1000 scholarship. Student must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and 30 credit hours at HWC.
  • The Albert Soglin Scholarship was established in memory of Albert Soglin, HWC longstanding unionist and Math Professor and Thomas McBride former HWC student who loved attending our college. The Soglin scholarship provides several $500-$1000 scholarships to Harold Washington college students. Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and 30 credit hours at HWC.
  • The Dennis Macklin Scholarship was established in memory of Dennis Macklin, a 20 year professional member of CCCTU. This scholarship is intended for students majoring in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity or Information Technology.​
  • The Edward S. Orzac Scholarship​ (Undocumented Student Scholarship) was established in memory of Edward S Orzac MD and MA Asian Studies who taught medicine and Asian History as an Adjunct Professor at local Colleges as well as in India, Afghanistan, and Indonesia. The Edward S. Orzac Scholarship provides one $1000 scholarship to an undocumented student at Harold Washington College. Student must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and 30 credit hours at HWC.
  • The Beatrice Orzac Scholarship for Languages & Music Majors was established in memory of Beatrice Orzac. A gifted violinist who was able to learn many foreign languages using her musical talents.​
  • M.E.N.A. Scholarship (For students of Middle Eastern and North African descent) The Harold Washington College, Local 1600 M.E.N.A. Scholarship
    is geared to students from the Middle East and North Africa. The goal of the
    scholarship is to promote the inclusion and awareness of these groups that have
    been historically marginalized and exploited.  The M.E.N.A. scholarship is
    for Harold Washington College students who are nationals or descendants of
    these countries (and other countries as determined by the scholarship
    committee): Afghanistan Algeria Bahrain Djibouti Egypt Iran Israel Jordan Kuwait Lebanon Libya Malta Morocco Oman
    Pakistan
    Palestine Qatar Saudi Arabia Syria Tunisia United Arab Emirates Yemen​
Criteria                                                 
                                                                                                    
The criteria for the scholarships offered by the Harold Washington Chapter of the Local 1600 Cook County College Teachers’ Union are as follows:
                                                                                                   
  • Harold Washington must be showing as Home College on CCC Transcript.
  • Student must have completed 30 credit hours toward graduation at Harold Washington College.
  • Student must have a graduate grade point average of 3.25 or better. (This does not include the current semester.) Obtain a printout of academic history and current registration from the Registrar’s Office and submit it with the application. It is the student’s responsibility to see that the submitted records are accurate.
  • Student must be enrolled for 9 or more hours in Spring at Harold Washington College. Enrollment in fewer than 9 hours will be accepted, if the student will be graduating at the end of the current spring semester. Students who have already graduated are not eligible to apply.
  • Student must show financial need.
  • Student must supply one recommendation from Harold Washington College faculty member. The second required recommendation form HW community faculty or staff is preferred.  A third (optional) recommendation may be supplied from any source (including community).
Applications missing any of the above requirements will not be considered.
               
                                                                                                    
Recipients will be chosen by the Union Scholarship Committee from any student— citizen, dreamer or international, meeting the criteria based on academic excellence and the student’s promise as judged by the grade point average, recommendations, and interviews with the Committee.
