Spanish Studies - World Languages

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States and has 414,000,000 speakers worldwide. Whether you are an absolute beginner or you learned Spanish at home, Harold Washington College has Spanish courses for all in language, writing, culture, and literature. Even those who speak a little Spanish find their skills in demand in every career, from business to healthcare to politics and so many other fields.

Our Spanish courses from beginning to advanced not only provide students an opportunity to learn or improve speaking skills, grammar, and vocabulary, but also introduce students to the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.

Heritage speakers of Spanish begin in advanced Spanish courses such as, Spanish 111, Spanish 113, and Spanish 114. These courses focus on academic Spanish that is essential in many fields. Culture and Literature courses Spanish 210, Spanish 213 and Spanish 214 introduce students to the most essential Spanish literature including Gabriel García Márquez and Pablo Neruda.

Courses

SPANISH 101 First Course Spanish—Pronunciation and basic structures, speech patterns, reading, and writing skills. Prerequisites: None. Credit Hours: 4              

SPANISH 102 Second Course Spanish—Continuation of Spanish 101. Prerequisites: Placement Test or Grade of C or better in Spanish 101.  Credit Hours: 4                  

SPANISH 103 Third Course Spanish—Review and development of basic language skills, conducted in Spanish. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Spanish 102 or Placement Test and Interview with World Language Faculty. Credit Hours: 4                  

SPANISH 104 Fourth Course Spanish—Review of language structure and interpretation of readings, conducted in Spanish. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Spanish 103; or Placement Test and Interview with World Language Faculty. Credit Hours: 4 GE/IAI                 

SPANISH 111 Spanish for Hispanos—Formal structure of Spanish and preparation for enrollment in advanced courses. Prerequisites: None. Credit Hours: 3 GE/IAI Course                   

SPANISH 113 Spanish for Near Native Speakers I—Review of formal structure and sound system of language for near-native speakers; emphasis on accurate, fluent and effective oral expression.  Prerequisites: Consent of Department Chairperson. Credit Hours: 4         

SPANISH 114 Spanish for Near-Native Speakers II—Continuation of Spanish 113. Emphasis on reading and writing skills. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Spanish 113 or Consent of Department Chairperson.  Credit Hours: 4                  

SPANISH 206 Intensive Oral Practice Spanish—Practice in spoken language, fluency and accuracy. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Spanish 104, Placement Test, or Consent of Department Chairperson.  Credit Hours: 4              

SPANISH 210 Modern Civilization & Culture Spanish—Modern Civilization and Culture Spanish Recent social, cultural, and historical trends, conducted in Spanish and English. Prerequisites: None. Credit Hours: 3 GE/IAI Course                  

SPANISH 213 Intro To Modern Literature Spanish—Selections from contemporary writings, conducted in Spanish. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Spanish 104, Placement Test, or Consent of Department Chairperson. Credit Hours: 3 GE/IAI Course                  

SPANISH 214 Readings In Literature Spanish—Works from selected historical periods, conducted in the Spanish. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in Spanish 104, or Placement Test, OR Consent of Department Chairperson. Credit Hours: 3 GE/IAI Course
