Foundational Studies ESL
The FS ESL Program is designed especially for academic track students who do not have a thorough mastery of the English language. All new students must take a placement test and oral interview to determine their level.
Foundational Studies ESL Courses
There are three levels of Foundational Studies/noncredit ESL classes. There are four courses, reading, writing, and speaking and listening/speech at each level. The grammar, writing, and reading classes are the core classes, and a speech class is also offered at each level. Students must take all four classes. These classes are not free.
The ESL Classes at Harold Washington are college/university preparation classes for students planning on a certificate or degree. Students take 4 courses 12 credit hours and pay 1/2 price tuition. These courses are not available for International Students or Au Pairs J1.
Level One: Beginning Reading, Grammar, and Writing FS ESL 4004, 4005, 4006 and FS READ 1004
Level Two: High-Beginning Reading, Grammar, and Writing FS ESL 4007, 4008.4009 and FS READ 1005
Level Three: Pre-Intermediate Reading, Grammar, and Writing FS ESL 4010, 4011. 4012 and FS READ 1006
Level Two: High-Beginning Reading, Grammar, and Writing FS ESL 4007, 4008.4009 and FS READ 1005
Level Three: Pre-Intermediate Reading, Grammar, and Writing FS ESL 4010, 4011. 4012 and FS READ 1006
Free classes for newcomers who want ESL for the workforce can take classes in the Free ESL Adult Education Program.
