Latino/a Students and the Transition from High School to
College -
Dr. Alejandro E. Carrion,
Assistant Professor of Latino/a Studies at Northwestern University.
In this workshop,
Dr. Alejandro E. Carrión, Assistant Professor of Latino/a Studies at
Northwestern University, will lead a discussion of the issues that Latino/a
students face as they transition from high school to college. The workshop will
address language; family educational background; social and cultural capital;
and assimilation. It will provide faculty with practical guidance regarding how
to best support our students as they make this transition.
Alejandro E. Carrión, Ph.D is an Assistant Professor of
Teaching and Learning in Latina and Latino Studies at Northwestern University.
He is an educator, scholar, and activist whose research focuses on the
intersection of Latino/as and education. He co-directs a youth participatory
action research project that works with Chicago Public Schools, the New York
City Department of Education, and Evanston, IL high school students to create
meaningful and impactful community-based research. Dr. Carrion has a background
in piloting, directing, and founding programs that assist students with their
transition to college in New York City
