The Fire Science Management degree is designed to concentrate on management and officer training with a target population of those who are already employed in the fire service.

The Fire Science Management degree is designed to concentrate on management and officer training with a target population of those who are already employed in the fire service. Particularly addressing the specific higher education needs of the Chicago Fire Department (CFD).  This program offers all necessary courses to attain certifications as Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Because of the many new and evolving challenges facing fire and emergency services today, many current and aspiring fire fighters, are opting to enhance their training and experience, by obtaining a formal education in Fire Science Management. This program has been developed in collaboration with the Chicago Fire Department, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and follows the curriculum guidelines of the National Fire Academy.  Our courses are primarily taught by faculty instructors who are experienced fire fighters from the Chicago Fire Department and surrounding areas.        

Program Mission

It is the mission of the Malcolm X College Fire Science Program to educate, inspire, and prepare our students for advancement to positions of leadership within the fields of Public Safety, Fire and Emergency Services.               

Admission Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to provide credentials that demonstrate employment with a fire department, or other public safety entity.
  • Must be eligible to enroll in or have passed English 101.
  • Must complete interview with the program coordinator.
