Service Learning

Julie D. Dockery

Service Learning Director

Service Learning integrates community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking, and civic responsibility.

The Service Learning program at Truman College allows students to broaden their classroom experience by performing meaningful work in the community. When community service is tied to academic lessons, students can apply their classroom lessons in English, government, science, math, economics, and other subjects to very real community problems. Service learning helps students become engaged in the public issues of their community and fosters respect and tolerance for others.

Students looking to get involved in their local community can talk to their professors or to the director of the Service Learning Program about how to get started. Also, gaining valuable experience and skills isn’t limited to your current classes; anyone is welcome to volunteer at any of the service learning sites.
